In the United States, at least 40 states are anticipating water shortages by 2024. Nearly two-thirds of the global population will face water shortages by 2025. In 2020, water became a futures commodity on Wall Street, similar to gold and oil. Farmers, investors, and municipalities can now hedge against or bet on the future price of water.
